Your Black-Owned Self-Care Routine
Self care is mandatory and rest is refuel for resistance. You don’t need me to tell you that. However, what you might need is a place to get started and products to use, and for that…I got you!
Self-Care Sunday means so much to me that sometimes, I start on Saturday 🤷🏾♀️ Back when outside was open I used to frequent the LUSH store at Del Amo Fashion Center — running out of my Cup O’ Coffee face mask was simply unacceptable. However, with online shopping as my only form of shopping and as I’m actively working to diversify my shopping cart (read: by from only BIPOC-owned brands, with a specific emphasis on Black-owned brands), I’ve been trying out new brands and adding them to my Self-Care Sunday regiment.
Keep reading to find out the steps and products I use for a perfect BLACK-OWNED Self-Care Sunday.
Step 1: Tea & Meditation
I usually start off my Sunday with a livestream of The Potter’s House at OneLA, and some green tea. After church I make my way outside for a lil’ yoga session. Some days, I just flow and breathe into what needs to be stretched. Other days, I listen to a guided practice like the one below, led by Black Yoga Instructor Tiara:
Step 2: Cleanse
After you’ve gotten a light sweat going and catered to your bodies needs it’s time for your skin. Start your skincare routine with a cleanser (like this chamomile one from Elle Johnson) and a toner (like this Lemon Balm Mist from Pholk.)
Step 3: Mask and Bath
Begin running yourself a bath, and while the water is warming apply your face mask for maximum cleansing and relaxation. There are so many black face mask companies to choose from, and I’ve listed a few below:
One I’m really excited to try is this Marshmallow Clay Mask from Kaike!
Also: I highly recommend investing in one of these silicon brushes for mask application. They’re inexpensive and make it feel like you’re painting a picture on your face. Also, it eliminates mask-under-nail syndrome.
Once your mask is on, hop into the tub and drop in one of these bath bombs from Shea Shea Bakery.
Step 4: Unwind
“Alexa, play A Muse in Her Feelings by dvsn,”…or whatever chill music you’re into right now. Make sure you have a glass of wine (or cup of tea) handy, I’d go for this Black Girl Magic Red Blend from the McBride Sisters Collection!
Now sit back and relax. For maybe the first time this week, let your shoulders sink and your eyes close.
Oooo! Don’t forget to light your new favorite candle, try one from Shea Shea Bakery.
Step 5: Nourish
The next skincare step is to give your skin it’s daily vitamins with either a Vitamin C Serum like this or an antioxidant relief serum like this!
Extra Credit: Scrub & Plump
I like to do a lip scrub once a week to rub away all of the debates, arguments, and gossip that may have been on the tip of my tongue! If you’re the type that likes to do a little more than necessary, try this lip scrub and this lip mask.
Step 6: Soothe & Moisturize
Depending on what time of day you do this regiment — you maybe be ready to wine down and retreat for the night. Choose between this moisturizer and this night cream.
Step 7: Feel yourself
If you ask me, everyone should be prescribed a self-care day at least once a week. The hardest part is actually doing it, so I’ve ironed it out for you here. Let me know if you try any of the products and have a lovely Self-Care Day any day!
